8) I don’t think it’s right to say that we’ve been incessantly striving for 10,000 years. The gospel of progress is a hallmark of modernity and once accepted there is a tendency to see the whole past through the lens of “progress” as if all that came before was merely preparation for … us. It’s a kind of self-congratulation, really. From Homer’s time to the Antonines, for instance, there was by the standards of today negligible technological progress. And then regress after that. But the key point here is that technological progress is not necessarily simply good for man, for the soul. Hence not all progress is truly progress.
9) I think there is a soul and the ancients proved this as well as it can possibly be proven without recourse to faith (and I am definitely not disparaging recourse to faith). The worst aspect of modernity is its denigration and the forgetting of the soul. It is not an accident that in Machiavelli’s major works he does not use the word even once. It is the soul that must be recovered, or to say better the idea of the soul, since the thing in itself has not gone away, we’ve just forgotten about it and lived our lives as if it didn’t exist, but it does.
