it’s believed that they crash dived before completely closing the aircraft hanger doors (practice drill), she went down like a stone with all hands lost.

The M1 had a battleship calibre turret (rather than a hanger), she was hit by a steamer while running submerged. lost the turret in the collision and the sub flooded through the mounting hole. All hands lost.

M3 is in a museum.

They were all experiments on how the RN (Royal Navy) would operate subs along side the fleet.
